How to Choose The Best Painting For Your Home

Buying a painting is a very emotional experience.  They are what gives your home character so it’s important to choose the right piece. We’ve put together a checklist of things you should think about when you’re purchasing the perfect oil painting.

You Must Love It

This is the number one criteria. Do not be distracted by what “art experts” (ie your mother, friend, co-worker) tell you about how amazing a piece of work is.  The final decision is up to you. Art is all about communication.  Does it speak to you? Do you have an emotional response?  That is the sign of a good piece of art.

What Room Does It Fit?

Think about where the painting is going to be hung. What room will it be in? What is the room’s theme? What will it add to the room? What purpose is the painting going to serve? If it doesn’t compliment the room, it doesn’t matter how good the painting is. If you're unsure, one suggestion is to ask a friend to borrow a similar piece and see how it goes. If it does, you know what style you’re looking for.

Will It Stand the Test of Time?

The artist has put a great deal of thought and care into the artwork and, as a result, it gets better over time, like a fine wine.  If you want to look at it every day, you should like it more at the end of the month than you did at the beginning.  That is a good sign of things to come.

What is the Quality of the Painting?

Know the quality of what you are buying.  If it is not obvious what type of paint was used just ask. A painting, on good quality material and using good paint, should offer more than one lifetime of enjoyment. However, poor quality products can be fragile and a painting will need extra care for preservation. You still may choose to buy it but it is best to know ahead of time the quality of the materials used.
